Maria Engholm´s works are characterised by recognisable perspectives with underlaying disturbing elements. With the latter she emphasizes and twists the narration. Engholm´s paintings are color saturated spatious variations that collect their form from architecture, fictitious spatial realities, installations and the raw but nevertheless beautiful sides of cities around the Globe. With inspiration from the streets of her “hometown” Copenhagen to New York and Berlin she paints a glimpse of the seen and sensed and incorporates it through painterly visions in a new and unique expression. You are the spectator. Invited to come along on a journey into the painting - the detail. And co-create the narration.
Looking at Maria Engholm´s work one finds an interest for space. Space as an absolute and physical condition. And space understod as a borderless mental space, where experiences of the World are gathered as memories and where dreams are born and nurtured by reality.
Through an almost photographic and very meticulous painting method her work speaks of the relations between the sensed reality and human´s inner mental space. She combines a cool minimal aesthetic with elements from our everyday life to tricker our fantasy and question our understanding of current conditions.
