Artist Gunleif Grube was born in 1947 in the town of Skála on the Faroe Islands. He made his début at the K.E, Denmark in 1980. Since then he has had international exhibitions at museums and leading galleries and also published several art books.
Grube´s work is easy to recognize, but demands attention and time from the spectator to enter and fully understand. The used bold colors explode into demonic faces on impasto-painted canvases and cacophonous cascades of brush-strokes evoke chaffed bodies in empty spaces. The universe of Gunleif Grubbe is full of close-ups of great, gazing demonic masks that portray spiritual states of mind. With their tactile surfaces Gunleif Grubbe’s works fuse devilish energy and irresistible love of painting.
The raw and contrasting, even extreme, elements of Grube’s works derive from a dramatic nerve in his temper that stands in opposition to Danish mediocracy. Gunleif Grube’s paintings touches us with a force and an urgent presence that leaves nothing unaffected – you can like it or not, but you cannot escape it.
